Lost in time, hidden in the dark corners and in the dusty shelves of old book stores, in the basements of libraries and museums, lies the fabulous, fantastical history of the carnival sideshow - a time when the malformed were glamorized as part of a traveling caravan and not locked up in institutions. A time when there was a place and venue for amazing performers to come together in a gypsy caravan style and change the atmosphere of the town around them - reminding people there is another way of life and relieving people of their daily routines - reminding them of the power of magic and imagination. The roots of radical artistic movements of today are deeply intertwined with the carnival sideshows of the past…
We acknowledge our carnival sideshow roots to empower our communities with alluring, inventive, and fearless displays of imagination and dream! Our carnival sideshow not only provides a place for roving gypsy carnival performers and “human curiosities” to express their art but also provides an environment which revives and highlights the great performers and “freaks” of the past – and their true life stories! Using olde-tyme music, puppets, story telling as well as classic carnival sideshow acts and performance we create a world that taps into profound emotion, reminding the AUDIENCE of the actualization of the living dream. At the same time, this gives the “human curiosities” of the modern age a venue to be appreciated once again - this is our mission.
Our collaborative carnival art troupe is co-created with many fabulous idividuals - musicians, sideshow artists, clowns, writers, experts - each of which works on their routines, props, banners, and costumes in their locale. Each on its own is amazing, and together, we form our carnival ov dreams. We tour selectively, displaying our “History of the FREAKSHOW” museum installation, with a real life modern day freakshow and sideshow for our openings. With all ages kid-themed shows(dream shows) as well as adult-themed “nightmare” performances, our carnival sideshow does well at what we aim to do. I need to move in the next 20 or so days. and I was thinking about portland.. the thing is i only know the people from portland what was in the 999 eyes carinval what lives up there.
The reason is i need this move.. change of life for me and a new chapter to write in life.
I don't know where to go, or where to stay. ill have around 1 grand total to move. im getting the money from the lawyer. so i'm looking for a room to rent or something around 450-500 bucks. if you know of a collective or a place to rent please let me know asap. i need to get out of here before the poop flys..

Binewski family life is fully as bizarre as the family physiques. Bell jarred by existence on the road, socialized by the carnies who staff the midway, the children grow up unfettered by common conventions. Sibling rivalry is a take-no-prisoners guerrilla competition measured in daily box office receipts. Arturo, especially fierce in battle, devotes himself to improving the draw of his act and eventually hits on the ultimate device - he becomes a church. "What Arty wanted the crowds to hear was that they were all hormone-driven insects and probably deserved to be miserable but that he, the Aqua Boy, could really feel for them because he was in much better shape," relates narrator Olympia. "That�s what it sounded like to me, but the customers must have been hearing something different because they gobbled it up and seemed to enjoy feeling sorry for themselves." In trickles that become torrents, the marks ante up their worldly goods, join the Admitted, and begin the process of Shedding. Inch by inch, finger by toe, initiates practice a horror show of sympathetic magic, emulating Arturo in body (nubs and torso) so as to attain his perceived exalted state in mind and spirit. Arty�s growing ascendancy over following, Fabulon, and family, is accompanied by crescendoing cruel and amoral behavior. Inevitably events spiral to extremes dictated by Binewski family dynamics and internal logical, and Arturo and those around him reap the aphoristic just rewards of his absolute power.

Katherine Dunn presents the bizarre and twisted saga of the Fabulon, Arturism, and the nuke family Binewski as a series of flashbacks set within an older Olympia�s struggle to protect her daughter from an independent apostle of Arturo�s cult. Miss Lick�s vocation is liberating young women from the beauty that enslaves them to men, thereby providing them with the asexual, distraction-free existence that she feels she herself enjoys. "If all these pretty women could shed the traits that made men want them (their prettiness) then they would no longer depend on their own exploitability but would use their talents and intelligence to become powerful," she explains to Olympia. Money in exchange for the Shedding of beauty is what Miss Lick offers. Her personal satisfaction derives from her subjects� testimonies that the disfigurement is the best thing that ever happened to them � that, plus watching the scarifications. When Olympia�s daughter, raised as an orphan in ignorance of her Fabulon heritage, accepts Miss Lick�s initial offer to remove her lone Binewski "specialness", Olympia devotes herself to curtailing Miss Lick�s attentions, no matter the cost.

In Geek Love Katherine Dunn builds a hall of mirrors bridge from far beyond the edges of a reader�s most bizarre and terrifying nightmare to territory within most cognitive maps to the backyards of our own psyches. Where Arturo affects the destiny of hundreds, Miss Lick works on the scale of individuals. Where Arturo plays like harp strings the highest and basest emotions of his followers, Miss Lick plucks only at the chord of superficial greed. Where Arturo openly pursues omnipotent dominance and power, Miss Lick claims altruism as her motive. Yep almost 1 year june 15 or so, I was on my way to the Bay area for the first time in my life. I was with Lobster Girl, Diedera, and the Quaker thy Cirkus Kat. 1987-2005. Lobster Girl and Diedra came out to southern Ca to pick me up for a long and strange trip, sam and dylan stopped by also. after a side trip to meet bobby the side show king. it was back to long beach, to make sure i have everything I need. and my sweet kitty needed.
Then we were off on a wild time together. Up in Big Sur somehow the back of her truck door wasn't shut all the way and my medical bag fell out. well that was gone when we returned, but the other stuff was there. but looked through. I got almost everything replaced except the big boys. the pain killers. for my back.
any way I stayed at good ole Hell House in oakland 57 and mlk.. that was a weird experance for me. I lived a other kind of life.. always having shealter and being somewhat stable. and being around street performers and street kids that much. It didn't take me long to adjust to the area and the people around me. just all of the vegaterains and no meat, I felt lost up there but i got used to it. being somewhere you don't know anyone except a few people and p[eople at the house always ask when are you leaving. what i didn't know.. robert turned out to be a great person paula and steve were great to me.
Then there was spaz warehouse what i didn't know what was going on there. but it was a kool pad.
Then came our first show in Berkeley at how to destroy the universe at the shipyard.. that was a great and fun time.. even if i didn't get plasterd that much I did on that weekend when people asked me if i wanted some Jack or southern conferent and other great shit to drink. I said ok.. and downed what ever they gave me to drink.. and smoke also. so after 10 or so i didnt remember much than I thought i was pegleg the mass killer. and after that in our traveles through theese selected states we hit and all the bitchen people we and I meet I will never forget them, and the people who helped me and quaker out you know there will always be a place in my heart for you. I had a blast the past summer and no regrets doing I look foward in doing a other tour and seeing all of my family again..
All of this happend almost 1 year ago the day what changed my life in a postive way..

I went down to Hollywood Ca, today to meet with Reza (cell phone 310-407-9904) He is the casting director of a upcoming movie called Side Show or SideShow. It is a horror movie based on the old traveling side shows of the 1900’s This is not a high paying gig but it will be around 200.00 a day and last 3-4 days. Out of towners they will put you up at a hotel. In Riverside where they will film it at., riverside is out in the desert so it will be HOT and DRY In June 9 or somewhere around there when they plan to film the movie it will be in the 90’s to 100 or so.They are looking for more people to be in it. NOAH I put in a good word for you as the Ring Master. All the parts will be Speaking, Larry I told them about you.. H E A Call them please they want you. Jackie they said you already contacted them so that’s great.

If any of you could help me. by that seeing me ask Chraka or seeing me use her phone, to call my landlady! That will be a great help. or even just seeing me use the phone. this was around july 1-? how ever long we were there.. Oh we were in Enguene on july 5 now I remember. but if you heard me saying I need to contact teh landlady. that will be a great help. I go to court on April 24, 2006 , she swore in court I never tried to contact her at all. I know I used Derida cell phone on or around July 1. If your out here Dreida or back in the Oakland area. let me know. i will put out my lawyers email address to whom dose reply.
My case depends alott on this area taht I tried to call her she say's no I didnt.. but she also lied about serving me and said i was served in person on july 5.

short film seeks freaks

A man has contacted us about picking my brain about sideshow history and about using 999 freaks in a short film
he says he cant offer much money but can some and as well as promotion and photo packets which we could use as pitch cards for our next show, which we need to start planning

can i please hear from the human tripod, lobster girl, pegleg, the dwarf demure, the ring master if he is around and any other freaks out there personally.. about the possibility of you participating in a short film early march for some compensation.

i told him that pegleg and jackie would need transportation money as well as accomadations...
anyway we will see where it goes...

My next door neighbor has an iron on business of big beach stores in the South Bay..( NOT THE SF Bay Area. )but he can slik screen also.he gave me an ball park price of 5-7 bucks for t-shirts with my Picture on it and Pegleg thy Modern day Elephant Man on the front of the shirt and my picture on the back.. it will probably be the one of me in front of my banner..or one other one I have from an show.
should i get some shirts. to sell I probably have to order 24 or so.. If we do an tour or an mini tour do you think i can sell them?
I'm going try to inprove my act I am going try to get into some local shows. around Hollyweird, and the music video stuff, should be coming up soon.. i heard of an zombie movie in the works, so i took some pictures of me looking realy scary and zombie like,a nd emailed to the dude who will cast the movie, if it is filmed.. this is in pre production and they are looking for an Name actor to play this role.. but it dosn't hurt to try..

I need to get the fuck out of here, ASAP!!!! Livin with an person with an OCD sucks (CLEAN FREAK) I can't even have an paper on an dresser, with-out having an hour yelling at. He yells at no town on the floor for water from the shower, they yells thats there is an towl on the floor, He thinks he is smart but he is the dumbest person i ever meet in my life.. He makes around 140.00 an hour, and says im worthless all the time, I woulnt even hang anything on the wall. because it would make an nail hole.. or even the kind what uses an 2 sided tape. it will leave tape behiend. I'm not an clean freak i'm far from it, but have someone yell at you to wash the counters off when your still doing dishes and not even done, he needs help in an major way. I started to keep an notebook by the head of the bed so I can write stuff down when I think of it.. boy that set him off. I try to do what he say's I see he is helping me out but to hear major bull shit 24-7 gets to you..I don't think i can stay calm anymore from his harassment..
I don't even sit on the couch its an new one.. or sit at the kitchen table also i stand up to eat.. if an drop of water falls on the table and he sees it within 50 thousand of an sec. he is yelling clean that up.. your an slob.
I hate it here also, he caused my cat to get injured by opeing the door hard on him. just to say I'm an burden on his life and I caused his divorce.. but she is just an snob rich fucking bitch I never liked her, but I always tried to treat her with resept even when i was treated like crap by her. I just need an place i can go to, and get out of here, even if its out of state.

Final Status Conference August 24, 2006 8:30 a.m.

Post-Mediation Conference: April 27, 2006 8:30 a.m.

The Court ordered the parties into mediation, and mediation must be completed by April 26, 2006. A mediation is like a conference, where a third party tries to settle the case, taking into account the evidence gathered by all sides. This is weird, The reason I say that I was thinking about one of my old places I lived, In Inglewood CA right across from Holywood Park Horse Race Track.
The person who lived there was in the Black Arts, and he left an lott of stuff behiend when he moved out, I did one thing in there what scared the poopie out of me. I changled what was in there on, being dumb 20 year old pot smoking heavy drinking dude. what ever it was, all ill say it had hoof's feet like an horse and around 10 feet tall. all I can say My dog at the time wasn't scared of anyoneor anything. he tried to go through the door to escape..
Just an example i didn't even lock my door at night the dog wouln't let an soul into the house even if he knew them.

Had a bizarre carnival dream last night. Everyone was trying to get home, and all the money was gone. I had a van registered in my name with all my D&D books in it, but really sucked gas. Also had my girlfriend's Honda, full of my clothes and stuff, but the trunk wouldn't shut and I had no rope or bunjee or stringAAAAAIIIIEEEE!!!!! I kept trying to get people with gas money to go with me, either that or instruments so we could busk on the way.

Below, please find the come-on letter that I'm sending out to all my performer associates in Portland.

Please DO NOT publish this in a general public forum for all possible people. Please DO send this message or a slightly-personalized version out to specific friends or relations who would be a good addition to the show.

As you probably know, I've been travelling for the past two months as the ringmaster of a carnival sideshow.

What you probably have not heard about is Pegleg, our modern-day elephant man, being suddenly and unceremoniously evicted from his home in Los Angeles.

The whole thing happened so suddenly, in fact, that he was spirited off to L.A. before I knew he was in trouble.

So now, Pegleg (aka Ken, aka Peggo) is living in his car in Long Beach, waiting for his next SSI check to show up so he can start working on getting himself into a new home.

To help Pegleg with this effort, those of the carnival who are presently in Portland are organizing a fundraiser show quick-snap, to be held Saturday August 20 at The Jasmine Tree.

And I'm writing you, right now, to see if you'd like to be involved. We need performers, and DJs, and a sound/tech, and people to help spread the word.

Curious as to who is going? Also, wanting to communicate (if I hadn't already) that I will NOT be able to go to AMF. I have to drive my material world to Boise, ID on Monday-Wednesday and have classes/performances in Portland until then. Nolon and I are still planing on leaving for BM either Wednesday night (the 10th) or Thursday morning and hopefully driving directly to Gerlach. Are any other cirkus DPW going to be there already? WORDS from the Sideshow community

This is a woman from the sideshow world who came to pick up kens cat and take care of it if needed and help us get the cat to the vet etc. you know while we were "abandoning him and all", we have also looked into getting help for him because of his disability and the refusal of a ramp from the landlord, any one want to help? Lawyers etc.
anyway still stuck in seattle hope to see you all in the forest

"I left the club last Saturday night before meeting up with Samantha X
prior to her performance. Not having a CAR can be limiting in the
wee hours, so I was hoping just for a chit chat backstage, but I left
after being told that the troupe was stranded in Seattle.

When I met up with Samantha the following day at the Clown House (I
am SO GLAD I live in a city with an actual Clown House!), she
introduced me to some of the show people: The Elephant Man (who has
neurofibromatosis); The Dwarf, The Lobster Girl and various
performers who weren't "human oddities." Apparently there's a lot of
music involved in the performance, which I unfortunately I never saw.

The Dime Museum was stranded in Seattle with the truck and The
Elephant Man had an urgent need to return to Southern California to
deal with his stuff so transportation was stressing people out. The
Elephant Man was traveling with what is possibly the World's Oldest
Traveling Cat -- Quaker is NINETEEN!!! Neither Greyhound nor Amtrak
will let animals travel, not even the World's Most Ancient Pussycat,
and airlines want a vet visit and shots and certificates.

I wished I'd had a truck to give them being furious about them having
been sold a truck with a bad ENGINE, which is evil, but all I could
do was to volunteer to catsit the Very Old Cat...the thought of being
separated from his frail companion of almost two decades seriously
upset The Elephant Man. Fortunately he was able to put together the
funding for air transportation so the two friends could travel
together...

Meanwhile these guys really need an operations manager with greasy
hands understands the internal combustion engine and/or a motor home
adapted for the disabled. Maybe Vocational Rehabilitation would
help? Is a Sideshow Career a viable option for the human oddity?

Nice people, gracious under pressure, some of them Jewish and I was
shown a photo of Ms. Wallenda Strong that made her into quite a
looker, fer sure.

I'm trying to post the photos of Sabala's Mt. Tabor, the club I

Box van or short bus needed ASAP

Our friend and former bus driver Chakra has decided to quit the tour half way in, leaving us without a ride for the phoenix fest-seattle-AMF-Burning man leg ov our tour. WE have need of a short bus or box van, our budget is about $1500. We need a vehicle that will not break down on us, as we have people in wheelchairs who cannot hitch hike easily who are now stuck in PDX. west coast this Tue to play.
i'd LOVE to more than anything in the world, do not get me wrong.

999 Eyes ov Endless Busking tomorrow

Hey gang.

Thee 999 Eyes are in town, and we've just completed our first of three nights at Liberty hall.

For those of you who didn't make the scene - the tournout was a wee bit smaller than we might have hoped.

So tomorrow, we're embarking on an onslaught of busking and flyering, all over the city.

If you want to throw down with the big busk-fest, meet us Saturday morning (tomorrow) at 10 AM. We're going to split up into busking units, and then hit places like Saturday Market, The Free Geek Carnival, Hawthorne, 23rd, etc. Playing music and otherwise performing, handing out flyers, begging for money.

If you miss us at 10, come find us around town maybe.

Shows tomorrow at 7 and 9:30.

THE PLAN HAS NOT CHANGED.

Meet here, tomorrow morning, by 10 AM if possible. We won't leave without you as long as we know for sure that you're coming; but remember we have a show to do TOMORROW NIGHT around 9, so having enough time to get our shit together in Eugene before then will be essential to a solid show.

Unless otherwise specified, you're all invited. We have insane plans for the Eugene run; including a performance of Day Ov The Zombie, a Nequaquam Vacuum show, butoh clowning from Sheri and maureen of PAN, Synchronicity Frequency both solo and accompanying our fire troupe, and of course the carnie music and freakshow museum that are our main line of business. And more, fuck. So much.

In fact, there's still plenty of time and space to fit in whatever new acts you might be interested in presenting. But you'd better get shit together quick.

We are PARTICULARLY IN NEED of fire performers to flesh out our evening at The Samurai Duck 7/12 - Ivizia, Peach, I'm looking in your direction...

Eugene Opportunities!

Just a heads up for those who don't know...

The Eugene gigz fall on County Fair weekend hence:
There are busking opportunities outside the fair (or if you can get in then... wow! thousands ov hippies with cash!!)
Also, much camping available...

Eugene will have lots ov people that weekend, so, even the Saturday Market should provide a better than average busking scene!

Perhaps, we'll see some of ya'll at the PDX pit-stop, and we will be down to dance on the 9th...

Hey crew,
I just want to sincerely appologize for not being able to provide better for everybody involved with this project. And though i want to see it succeed it is not my intention for that to happen at the expense of our saftey and comfort.
It has been a run around with the tour bus and the bay area was incredibly challenging and inhospitable, as was Santa Cruz.. The bus is now painted black and will soon have curtains and beds. Hopefully this will help us in achieving a lifestyle that will help us in working together to inspire our creative process and to feel supported. Noah has been amazing in staying with the bus while dylan and i run around in the museum truck taking care of errands. Noah has done an amazing job trying to take care of everyone and everything and alot has been put upon his back this past week. I want to thank him for being so patient and sweet and speaking the truth when that was what was needed, Thank you Noah! It may be that this last experience in the Bay has made some people not want to continue the tour, and for those of you please know you are welcome back when we work out the rough edges. and again i applogize for the rough edges and i am so sorry i did not get to the bay area earlier and actually speak with spaz personally. I learned to never rely on sources because they have been valid in the past. I am again sorry to have put anyone in an unsafe or even less than desirable circumstance. You are all amazing!

A word about co-creation

I want all ov you to feel that this is your project. This is the most important lesson i have learned from working in a collective business - Each person must feel this way for the business to be a success. So far, i am highly honored to be working WITH all of you! I want you to feel the same!
Please consider what you can do so that we have everything we need for this tour. So far, many have contributed their skills. Some have contributed financially. A few have given up everthing to make this project a success. burn out will ensure that these few don't last long - when there is more that is done by everyone, the ten staves shall be distributed evenly - thus ensuring no burden is felt by anyone. When you distribute the ten staves out, one to each, then there is new growth...!
The potential of this troupe is amazing and the co-creation that is possible shall ensure that it is something that will alter reality. Creating sustainability and abundance is vital to seeing this project create something that is new and inventive in the sideshow world while still honoring the anscestors and carnivals of olde.

Letter to PAN

My darling PAN, a new blossom has sprouted from this unworthy infant
branch, as I do my best to initiate four eager disciples into the
mysteries of butoh. And such sights we have seen already! We have
been the sun, scuttled away by the great scarab and thence set
orbiting around the edge of all things, only to return and devour the
scarab when our orbit is complete. We have been four self-martyrs,
to imbue lifeless clay with the power of a prophet, then hang him high
from chrome hooks on a forklift in a great shipyard filled with fire
machines and madmen's inventions. We have been ourselves, trapped in
our everyday lives until the call of the freaks compells us to tear
free of our prisons and join them, though we are broken in the process.

And through it all, we have been joined by the most amazing collection
of musicians and performers: Soriah, Ryan "Synchronicity Frequency"
Olson, Roadkill the Puppetmaster, J the floutist, Lana Guerra on
homemade analog synth, drum adept Nolon Ashley, and the aforementioned
Dale Morris playing an epiphanous guitar solo whilst suspended above
our heads.

Which is not to draw attention away from my other role in this
carnival: that of Ringmaster.

For I have been discovering a new character in this role, with the
voice of a demon and the eyes of a child, equal parts showman and
evangelist, bearing good news of the dawn of the age of freaks and the
fall of conformist civilization.

"It only took three nails to silence your messiah, ladies and
gentlemen - see our blockhead - the menacing, the malevolent, Mystic
Marlowe - drive FIVE NAILS into his own skull, and LIVE TO TELL THE
TALE! For we have assembled here... beneath the stars of
California... this alarming assemblage of anatomical anomalies,
unimagined by modern science! One-of-a-kind prototypes, plucked whole
from the bowels of God's imagination, and sent forth with the prophecy
of a new era of uniqueness!

"And for only one... greasy... dollar... YOU TOO may enter beyond the
veil of the 999 Eyes Museum Banner... and gaze upon a vision of the
HORRORS which await... all those who refuse to CAST OFF THE BONDS OF

Breaks & Freaks July 28th - Flyer ready

First of all, I'm EXTREMELY excited to have you perform at Contour on July 28th. People are going to love it. It is a great club where you can really interact with the crowd. It has a beautiful patio. You can wander around the club, patio, sidewalk and even in to the street. At the last Breaks & Freaks on Thursday, we had a 9 ft bunny rabbit trying to hail a cab.

Everyone PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER:
We are in Santa Cruz right now, about to buy the materials and start building "a" dome tomorrow. We really need money to pay for this, if we are going to have a "big top". So far we got donations from Dan and Stillborne, but no one else...? I really thought we were all gonna pitch in on this, not just the gobbelins....
Donations of $20 - $100 should be delivered in person or sent western union to dylan mcneill in santa cruz, CA. Or if you can't wire it by Friday, sent to:

Tour Schedule Update 6/9/05

An updated tour itinerary as it stands now is reproduced below.

I know of several other shows in the Very Likely stage - Dylan and Sam have spoken of The Magic Castle in L.A. (WOW!), 21 Grand in SF, a National Sideshow Gathering, the Idaho State Fair or another State Fair show perhaps with John Strong. I've got irons in the fire for Cirque Berzerk in LA, more ArtWalk shows around SoCal, The Blue World, Release the Bats, and other cool sleazy LA art scenes; and also a neat opportunity in Santa Fe NM, and more Seattle action proposed for late July/early August.

X/McPuke - I'd love to hear more about any gigs that are confirmed but not yet on this list.

6/18 Daytime - HAPPY VAG BUS swings through Seattle - All Aboard! Chakra Lu is aboard, picks up Noah, Ishan, more PAN???

6/18 Nighttime - FUNDRAISER PARTY and SEND-OFF and VIDEO PREMIERE (tentatively at VENOM STUDIOS, not yet confirmed), Portland

It is unique among Austin’s urban festivals in that it celebrates the downtown cityscape by programming performing and visual arts IN and ON the fabric of the city – plazas, storefront windows, building lobbies, hotel ballrooms, balconies, theaters, museums, and more.

With the cityscape as the “stage” for the arts, First Night Austin provides an exceptional opportunity for artists, both established and emerging, to expand and explore their creativity, to engage members of the community in their work, and to partner with artists across the disciplines. First Night Austin encourages partnerships between artists, arts organizations and community members in the creative process of developing a proposal for New Year’s Eve.

First Night Austin will include an afternoon Family Festival, a Grand Procession down Congress Avenue, a Family Finale at City Hall, Evening Programming, and a Midnight Finale. We invite you to walk the “footprint” of the event - from Congress at 9th to Town Lake; 2nd Street to City Hall; 1st Street Bridge to Auditorium Shores – and explore the possibilities for art and performance integrated into the fabric of the cityscape.

First Night Austin is committed to reflect, and be sensitive to, the ethnic, racial, social, cultural, artistic and intellectual diversity of the greater Austin community.

PROPOSALS ARE BEING ACCEPTED IN ALL VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS.

First Night Austin will accept proposals for visual/environmental/interdisciplinary and performance art, music, movement theater, dance, puppetry, storytelling and the literary arts, film, video, theater, wearable art, participatory craft making, circus arts, comedy, cultural arts, and technology art, including projects for the Grand Procession.

THE GRAND PROCESSION: Envision a lively collection of costumed musicians, artists, members of the community, animated by banners, giant puppets, drums, gongs and cymbals, banners and portable sculptures, processing down Congress Avenue! Proposals that have a musical component as well as portable sculptures and large puppets are encouraged for the Grand Procession. Musicians and those carrying masks or banners should be costumed and in groups of at least 10-20. Each work’s artistic concept, durability, scale and mass effect will be the criteria for its selection. Groups from Austin’s culturally diverse ethnic communities are particularly encouraged to participate in traditional festival costume.

LARGE SCALE PUBLIC ART: Installations of temporary visual and environmental art, including light, projections and other media that utilize the city landscape and/or serve as a connecting framework, with emphasis on site specific works for One Congress Plaza, sponsored by Wells Fargo, City Hall Plaza, sponsored by City of Austin, 1st Street Bridge, sponsored by Time Warner Cable and Auditorium Shores, sponsored by Freescale.

RESOLUTIONS: Sculptures and installations rooted in ancient traditions to mark the passage of time that inspire a sense of renewal, incorporate and/or respond to the public’s hopes, wishes and resolutions for the New Year. Proposals that involve audience participation are encouraged.

AFTERNOON FAMILY FESTIVAL: Performances and hands on creative workshops to be presented in the afternoon that focus on children, children’s participation and family entertainment. Sponsored by H-E-B.

NEIGHBORHOOD COLLABORATIVE: Community based projects are sought which actively involve the public partnering with an artist. Special attention will be given to proposals that include projects within the neighborhoods of greater Austin involving community organizations and/or schools in the development of a piece or performance to be showcased as part of First Night Austin.

PERFORMANCE: Short repeated performances, both afternoon and evening, are more suitable than lengthy programs and should not exceed 45 minutes. New and innovative works that are not technically complex are encouraged. Proposals for classical music, theater, dance, mime and performance art should list the specific program or work to be performed. Presentations of 20 minutes or less, featuring different artists/companies may be grouped into collective programs.

STOREFRONT WINDOWS: Performances and installations inside storefront windows that are viewed by the public from the sidewalk.

BUILDING LOBBIES, BALCONIES, PLAZAS: Performances and installations that take advantage of unique features in the built environment.

STREET SURPRISES: Activities beginning December 29th that anticipate the upcoming celebration, i.e. fantastically costumed musicians, artists and street performers.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Panelists drawn from the different arts disciplines and First Night Austin staff will review proposals. Selection criteria will be based on artistic merit, feasibility, and the availability of funds. First Night Austin pays artists whose proposals are accepted. New works commissioned by First Night Austin remain the property of the artist(s), but require that First Night Austin be listed as the commissioning organization.

Samantha X and H. Burns’ Museum ov Mutant-strosities

This is a play done in mime with voice over soundtrack. 3 acts at 15 minutes each. All mimes may vocalize any gibberjabber they wish; it is possible that the showmen will pitch with bullhorns if we can get a-hold of some, or a microphone may be used for the professers speech in act 3.

ACT 1: Freaks of the past
Costumes: subdued, olde-tyme to victorian style. Think “Sepia-tone”.
Props: 2 podiums, 2 bullhorns, banners behind each podium, big banners of jojo and mertyl corbin (the 4 legged girl).

Mr. DIG: (Opening, greeting. Welcome, etc.) Before the first act of the evening, and, indeed, throughout the night, we will be presenting a series of small plays which highlight the carnival sideshow revival that the 999 Eyes ov Endless Dream Carnival Museum and Sideshow houses. For those of you who are sensitive souls, please be warned: the subject matter discussed herein is only for the light of heart.
To Exploit or to Exhibit?
To exploit… or to exhibit?
Who would have thought that WE could find fabulous, fanciful, ferocious, fetching, fiendish, first-rate, fantastical freaks and actually put together a modern day freak show?
The media tells us that “those people” are in institutions, or at best, mockup gaffs of them appear in horror movies. If we are to see them walking around, certainly it would be rude even to notice that they are different at all… let alone call them “freaks” and ask them to join a traveling museum.

Those outside the lines of normality in appearance, you see, have been studied, gawked at, experimented on, exploited and exhibited. In the middle ages, they were seen as proof of God’s displeasure with the human race – at this time they were exploited by the church for their own purposes of social control.

During the 1840’s to 1920’s, they were the main attractions of many shows, and viewed as entertainers. Later, they were considered scientific curiosities – probed, studied, poked, and dissected for answers in the name of “progress”.

Today, they are hidden from society, behind the walls of institutions, where they are seen as “unfortunate” creatures, dependent on the welfare system, uncontrollable, and insane. But are they really all that?
I think not. I am afraid that we are here to destroy the preconceptions ov human beauty that have been foisted upon your fragile psyches… but even deeper than that, we are here to shatter the illusion that strangeness should be feared.
(nickelodeon music begins)
To Begin, we take you back to the year 1884, during the hey-day of the freakshow. Where we see two showmen running a classic style grind show, pitching, to turn the tip, in a valiant effort to make the nut….

showmen enter, pushing their mobile freak curtains, set their podiums, hang their banners, and start barking… old-tyme audience members approach, pay and enter tent, come out looking amazed. Meanwhile, H. Burns is on the museum

Showman 1: Theodore PerchiKopff’s museum of Sky Terriers

Synopsis:
1. Two showmen work together, one after the other pitching jojo and then myrtle corbin.
2. Stick pipes up, buying ticket.
3. Stick Enters.
4. Showmen Pitch, turns the tip,
5. Stick comes out smiling, obviously amazed at the “freak” within
6. Showmen pitch.
7. Another Audience member enters.
8. Showmen pitch.
9. Scientist approach, commenting about the freaks “Very interesting… a girl with four legs… two vaginas… this merits further study…” the stick picks one of their pockets.
10. Audience member exits, fainting away at the sight of the freak within, scientists help the fainting person, all three exit.
11. The stick brings the wallet and splits it with the showmen.
12. All three pack up and exit.

ACT 2: MIDWAY
Props: 2 podiums, 2 bullhorns, banners behind each podium, 2 trash bags, bottle o whisky,

Mr. DIG: (opening, praising last act, etc) And now, for the next installment of our History ov the freakshow, we find ourselves in the first part ov the 20th Century. It is a time when the freakshow is one of the most common forms of entertainment, and most certainly the most popular show on the midway – now this is before television, ladies and gentlemen – It is also the time that the United States entered world war one.
In every Victorian home, one could find in the photo album on the tea table photos or pitchcards – such as we have for sale on our very own museum table – of such freaks as Ely Bowen the Legless Man, Charles Tripp the Armless Photographer, Lionel the lion-faced boy, Baby Carrie the fat lady, and Princes Lillian the Albino.
At this time, at coney island alone, 30,000 slow moving spectators were visiting the ten-in-one string show each summer day. Freaks were in such high demand that the showmen were only on their best behaviour towards the freaks in order to keep their freaks from traveling to a competitor’s show…
However, the early rumblings of discontent around exhibiting people for profit and amusement were being heard on the midway. The concepts of Charles Darwins’ book, “the Origin of Species”, coupled with the resurgence of Medel’s laws of genetics, were warped by the eugenics movement – to make people believe that “freaks” could taint the gene pool, reverting our evolution – this was called devolution.

Circus march starts. Decimal enters, juggling, as showmen set up.

Synopsis:
1. Showmen start pitching and they are competing, one after the other, pitching their freaks.
2. Showman #1 pitches the ballyhoo “Mississippi Gourmet”, and audience members crowd around.
3. Herbie Hatman pitches the ballyhoo “Blockhead”, and audience crowds around.
4.Showman #1 pitches whole string of freaks, audience crowds around.
5. Herbie Hatman pitches whole string of freaks, audience crows around.
6. Scientists approach, claiming Maternal impression and the missing link
Scientist #1 “It is just amazing how the experience of the mother during pregnancy can affect the baby to the point of deformity. Just look at the poor unfortunate mother who waited up late, sick with worry about her husband - night after night - until he would finally stumble home drunk from the bar with the coat draped over his shoulders. Why, her daughter, Anne Leak, was born with no arms at all! I tell you maternal impression breeds freaks”
Scientists #2 “Nonsense, they are missing links! They prove that we humans came from monkeys. Have you not seen Krao Farini the monkey girl, or Julia Pastrana? They are proof that we are no more than civilized forms of primates.”
7. Showmen push off the bally hoo and bring up the scientist.
8. Snare drum beat is heard, and clowns run away as Uncle Sam enters on stilts with an army recruiter on puppet strings, who signs up audience with clipboard.
9. Uncle Sam and audience leave, marching off stage.
10. Showmen bellyache about their fate… and pack up and off to the next town
11. ”There’s only enough left for one bottle o’ whisky”
12. Snake oil Salesman approaches (Mr. DIG), sells them snake liquor.
13. Ballyhoos and showmen chug and chug and chug and pass the bottle to the next and the first one passes out. 2nd one chugs and chugs and chugs, and passes the bottle to the third, who chugs and chugs and chugs and passes the bottle to the fourth, but Decimal comes and grabs the bottle and chugs and chugs and chugs and passes the bottle finally to Herbie, who finds the bottle empty and just smashes it over his head and is knocked out.
14. Scientists approach with bags and enter the Freakshow. They come out with bagged freaks who are struggling and take them away.
15. Showmen get up, groggy, and pack up the show.

ACT 3: Experimentation
Props: 2 tables covered in white sheets, surgical instruments
Characters:
2 scientists
2 freaks (dwarf and Lobster girl)
the Professer
Pegleg (or giant handed man or leopardman)

Sounds: Eerie and technological (ask brian?)

Scene begins with freaks layed out on tables, the scientists are in the foreground discussing what to do with the freaks…

Scientist #1 “Well, according to Darwin, if we just dig deep enough we will find a monkey inside here. Can you believe those scientists of old – thinking that freaks were
touched by the Devil? Such absurdity!”

Scientists #2 “Nonsense! They’re no missing link. They are monsters, I tell you. These creatures must be sent to institutions. If we catch them at birth, there may be a small chance that we can cut off an extra head, and that they will be functioning members of society. But if we allow them to live, they will taint the gene pool. Didn’t you read Mendel’s law of genetics?”

Scientist #1 “Mendel had a point - yet there is still the possibility of Maternal Impression. Even if we control the population through the gene pool, those damn mothers could still create deformities. It would be much better if all babies were grown in test tubes.”

[Scientists #1 and #2 freeze, and silence reigns as the Professer enters with podium.]

Professer: “Pseudo-science!” Social institutions, a homogenized society they want to lock people up who are different from the majority. To be locked away, unseen by “human eyes” - as if these folks were not human at all? Will we allow social control to the point of all looking the same? All thinking the same? All speaking the same? All feeling the same?
I think not.
The world needs freaks. We must be reminded of the beauty of chaos - the random order of events that creates this topsy-turvy world we live in. We must be reminded that there is no order to this madness – this mad carnival of misfits and geeks. Through the exhibition of freaks we are reminded that nothing needs to make sense, nothing needs to stay in a classification or a category. Life - and death - are experienced across such boundaries. When we allow ourselves to see strange as beautiful then We are giving ourselves permission to remember that nothing is normal and that we can travel down any path our soul desires, creating new doors - evolving the species. Letting go of guilt of having strange desires.
If we allow strangeness to be looked down upon and feared we are stuck in the boxes created for us by those who have the money to fund the research which tells us what is and what is not strange.

Scientist #1: Gadzooks! Have you seen the latest article in the scientific journal?

#2: Ah yes, the latest issue! It appears they’ve found more proof of our latest theory: that sinful behaviour is to blame for the latest round of devolution!

#1: Yes, and thanks to the sinful nature of cities – spawned by the industrial revolution – more and more freaks are being born. Curious that the vast majority of freaks appear in the lower economic strata – factory folk and sweatshop workers… and the like!

#2: It’s obvious, of course. The poor are more likely to be ill mannered and sinful. They are to blame for the swift decline of our species!

Proffessa: Balderdash! Throughout history freaks have been seen as signs of god, signs of the devil, signs of a “tainted” gene pool, and signs that we could evolve and mutate. Freaks have allowed us to see that creation is ever changing.
The Freakshow has always fascinated people. We must not let the social institutions make us feel wrong for realizing that beauty is not a standard. Why is it that it is ok to go watch human models exhibiting the latest fashion, the latest hair do, the latest technology in plastic surgery - but it is considered demented, sick, and exploitative to see how nature is varied in its method of the evolution of the species. Can we go on letting our children think it is ok to see a 5’11’’ anorexic woman - but not ok to see a woman with no arms sewing? When exactly did the Freakshow disappear? Does anyone wonder where they went? When did we allow the media to make us believe that modern medicine “cured them all”? Ensuring they were exactly like the rest of us…
Have these scientists been hanging around with Hitler and Dr Mengele? Ladies and gentlemen, for one moment, I ask you to ponder upon the events that took place. What brought about a whole people from the notion that freaks were fabulous and interesting anomalies, to bringing a whole people into the belief that freaks were sick people that needed help, that should be feared, that were being exploited if they were performers in freakshows, – that Siamese twins needed to be separated, even if it means death or permenent retardation – that snake skinned woman’s skin was unattractive, and needed to be healed – that hair boy needed a shave?! Why did pinheads disappear off the sideshow rosters? Did no one wonder where they went? Did no one inquire? The exhibition of human oddities can be seen as far back as the beginning of recorded history – will we let the state-funded scientist, using their theories of genetics and classification allow us to feel uncomfortable in thinking that strange is spectacular?
The Nazis outlawed freakshows, in the year 1937. This made the freaks jobless, which in nazi germany meant “useless”. And it was illegal to be useless. These freaks were among the first to be incarcerated in Dr. Mengele’s laboratory – tortured and vivisected in the name of “Der Vaterland”.
In Amerikkka, it was at the North Fair Show in florida in 1972 that Sealo the seal boy and the dwarf Pete Terhune were brought to trial - for exhibiting themselves - facing an old law which equated freakshows with pornography.
It was the year 1984 when Barbara Baskin, a so-called “disability rights” activist, succeeded in banning or restricting freakshows in this country to the back of the midway. She used Otis Jordan, the frog boy, as her example of a poor, exploited individual. Due to her case, Otis Jordan was out of a job for two years while having to come to court to fight for his right to work. All this was on the basis that the exhibition of humans is exploitative. Ladies and gentlemen, there can be no exploitation where there is a choice! I will repeat: there can be no exploitation where there is a choice! To quote Otis Jordan, the famous frog boy – “I can’t understand it. How can she say I’m being taken advantage of? Hell, what does she want for me – to be on welfare?”
Will We allow the Freakshow to die? I think not.
(The professer then packs up his props and exits)

[Scientists begin conversing again]

Scientist #2: I think that both of our theories have merit, doctor. There is only one way to advance our theories, however…

BOTH(with zeal): VIVISECTION!

scientists turn, pulling surgical intstruments up and slowly approach freaks, freeze frame

voice offstage: NO! YOU WILL NOT MURDER MY BRETHREN!

[pegleg or giant handed man or leopardman enters, savagely mutilating scientists and waking freaks on tables, who run away, screaming. The last thing seen is pegleg or leopardman covered in blood, holding the disembodied heads of the scientists.]

Societas Insomnia's Weekend Plan

Good afternoon, my beloved cirkus family. Noah here, reporting from the Luscious Studios in Seattle.

I have at last formulated a plan for our big exit weekend, and I believe it's working with what everyone needs. Since time is short, and I'm going fuh-crazy trying to get all this together, I'll just go right into it:

SATURDAY, 6/18
circa 5:00: Chakra Lu, Apes, and myself arrive in the Happy Vag Bus, landing at my former home - corner of n mississippi and cook.

7:00 The Send-Off/Fundraiser/Video Premiere begins at that same house, N. Mississippi and Cook. The address is 3232 N. Michigan, but that's not a very helpful address. Here is a map:

The plan is to invite the general public to this party, and charge them $5 at the door. Of course, all cirkus cast and crew are in for free, and we can be very liberal about guests and whatnot. Keep in mind, though, that these $5 dribbles are going right into the tour fund, which will be helping to pay for our gas and food for the next three months.

Anybody who's willing and able to perform should bring their gear along - we'll be throwing down for whatever music and fire and anything else can be mustered out in my yard till around 10:00.

Bringing things to sell is a good idea, too. Not like a big yard sale; but things like selling wine by the glass, selling crafty things or CDs, homemade yummy snacks. If anyone can score us a pony keg or a few cases of beer, I'll reimburse you out of the cirkus money. That would be another good way to make cash.

Around 10, we'll head indoors and watch the video. Sean Strauss will have copies for sale to the cast for $5 apiece. I'm going to buy the master DVD from him, so we can make more copies once we get our hands on a DVD burner and some blanks.

And then we'll allow the party to sort of wind down naturally, not actually kicking anyone out till 1 AM or so.

And that's our Saturday.

SUNDAY 6/19

As it turns out, it's not making a lot of sense for the bus to leave Portland till Monday morning. The places that Dylan is arranging for us to stay and rehearse aren't ready for us till Monday night, so getting there Sunday night would be a little sketchy on all fronts. Also, the $500 advance check from Phoenix Fest has turned up missing; and we can't get it replaced till Sunday, and thus can't get it cashed till Monday. That $500 plus whatever we make at the fundraiser is our initial road nut.

What that means is, we have Sunday to get everyone together. My old house on Mississippi is the gathering place. I'll be awake by 9:00. Bring over everything you intend to take with you on the road, and we'll pack it in the bus. If some of you are unable to get your gear to the bus, we can hopefully arrange for the bus to come to you.

I'll do everything in my power to have my phone still turned on at that time. I have NO MONEY right now, thanks to about three different things going wrong for me all at once. So if my phone is turned off, try to get in touch with someone else from the troupe who can relay the message, or else e-mail me.

So that's Sunday.

MONDAY, 6/20
This is the day of our big exit, and we should try to get that going quite early if we can. Can everyone be ready to roll by 10? Crash at the Mississippi house the night before if you have to, or else meet us there by 10. If you realize that it's 10 and you haven't gotten to my house yet, call or e-mail right away. We won't leave withou you unless you've totally disappeared from the world.

It takes around 12 hours to drive to SF, so we should be rolling in there by 10 or 11.

As for our accomodations in the Bay: The idea of all of us living and rehearsing in a single space is looking pretty unlikely right now, due to many factors in the Oakland Warehouse Collective Scene that I won't go into here. By scattering us around amongst the various collectives and friends and safehouses, Dyland and I are confident that we can find enough crash space for everyone. Then we've got three days to get ready for our big gig at the How To Destroy the Universe Festival. I'm planning to do lots of rehearsing, busking on the street, passing out of handbills for the shows, and finalizing plans for some of the grey areas in the tour schedule.

We have a lot more to talk about once we're all in a room together. Some answers, I doubt we'll have for sure till we're in Oakland and able to talk with Dylan and Samantha as well. I promise that nobody will be kept in the dark, and nobody will be left out. This is your show. I'm working for you to manage and arrange the tour, but in the end it's the performers who will bring the necessary magic. Just tell me what you need, and I'll move mountains to get it. You have my word.

Oh boy oh boy. I can feel the momentum building from here in the nerve center. People are calling me every five minutes. Sam and Dylan are working on our Burning Man entry strategy, and things sound quite positive on that front. Gigs are crystalizing in Los Angeles and other points Southwest for the end of the run in September. Against all odds, I can see that this crazy glorious plan is going to come together. And I LOVE it when a plan comes together.

I am casting roles and organising parts for this amazing monster play that will show at the Mutant Festival and Burning Man.
For those of you not familliar yet with this play, it is an all monster/musical/dance/comedy taking place on a toad run steamtrain that goes through the heart of a dinosaur rainforest. There will be live music, puppets, fire-play, stage combat, dance, and acting within this piece.
If you are interested in becoming a part of this play. Let me know which festivals you are going to, any talents you have, if you want a speaking or nosn speaking role, or if you would like to help out offstage.
